Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
- What type of hosting platform does American Hosting Group
Use?
We use Linux based servers, running Redhat
Linux.
- How soon will my new account be setup and ready to use once
I've ordered and paid?
We typically have new orders setup within a
few hours. Sometimes setups will take a bit longer if your credit
card raises a flag with our payment processor.
- What does the control panel (Cpanel 6) do?
The Control Panel allows you to easily add
email accounts, administer your databases (with phpmyadmin), create
password protected directories, create subdomains, check your site
statistics, etc. Basically the Control Panel makes it super easy for
you to administer your hosting account without the need to contact
our support team. You'll be able to handle 90%+ of the normal
requirements directly through Cpanel 6!
- Do you offer a money-back-guarantee?
Absolutely. A full 60 days! If you're not
happy for whatever reason within the first 60 days of ordering your
account, we'll gladly give you a 100% refund.
- Will my site be backed up and how often?
We perform partial backups daily and full
backups weekly.
- How fast are your servers?
Our current servers are Intel Based PIII
1.2Ghz machines with at least 512MB of memory and dual 7200 RPM
hardrives.
- Do you host adult sites, warez sites or sites containing
illegal materials?
Absolutely not. Please see our "Terms and
Conditions" statement regarding this.
- Do you allow bulk email to be sent even though it is an
opt-in list (not spam)?
No. If you plan to send out to large email
lists or engage in spam, do not signup. Period.
- Can I update my site as often as I wish?
Sure. You'll have 24/7/365 access. Update your
site as often as you wish.
- What happens if I go over my allowed bandwidth and/or storage
space?
We will contact you and suggest ways to cut
back or you can pay the overages or upgrade your account. We will
not charge you for overages without notifying you first.
- I see some hosts offering "unlimited bandwidth". Why don't
you offer this?
Technically speaking, there is no such thing
as "unlimited bandwidth". Someone has to pay for the traffic
somewhere - and if you check the fine print of some service
agreements from companies who claim to offer unlimited bandwidth,
you'll probably find that they do charge for traffic over a certain
amount. We dispense with the fine print.
Technical Support Questions
- I've just signed up. Why can't I view my site?
If you haven't updated your domain's name
servers (DNS) to use our name servers then you will need to do so.
Once updated it takes 24-48 hours for these changes to propagate.
- Which folder should I upload my files to?
Upload all of your files into the "public_html"
folder.
- What is the path to Perl?
usr/bin/perl
- What is the path to Sendmail?
usr/sbin/sendmail
- Do you offer Webmail?
Yes. The url is: your_domain.com/webmail/
- I'm trying to use FrontPage to publish my site. What's wrong?
The FrontPage extensions are only installed
upon request. If you require them, simply open a HelpDesk ticket and
we'll have them installed shortly. This problem also occurs when
trying to publish to your site before your domain name has
propagated. Either you will have to wait until propagation is
complete are upload your site using an ftp client such as CuteFTP.
This is a known issue using Front Page with name-based IPs.
- I've changed my control panel password, now I can't login?
Passwords are case sensitive and are limited
to 8 characters. If you entered a password longer than 8 characters
please try entering the first 8 characters when logging into your
control panel.
- Where should I put my cgi scripts?
All CGI scripts should be uploaded to the cgi-bin
folder, located under the "public_html" folder, for your
domain. Be sure to follow the instructions for the script you are
uploading regarding setting permissions on the files and folders you
create, as they vary from script to script.
- Do you have a shared secure certificate that I can use?
Yes. Please contact us for instructions using
the shared certificate for your particular account.
- What is a "Cron Tab"?
A Cron Job allows you to schedule and execute
a PHP or CGI script at a given time. To create a Cron Job just log
into your control panel, select Cron Job, enter the date/time to run
the script and then the path to the script. An example of a path to
a php script would be: 'php /home/username/pathtoscript/script.php'
.
